Eden - A Poem
The whole of creation, God's grandest design,
Spoken into being mere moments in time,
But the crown of it all was man and his wife -
God bent down to Eden and breathed to them life.
The man and the woman in Eden did stay,
And fellowshipped freely with God in that day.
They both were quite naked, but they felt no shame,
In innocence they walked - no guilt and no blame.
God said that the fruit of the garden was sweet,
It's yours for the taking, just pick it and eat,
But of the middle tree, don't take it. Here's why:
The moment you eat it, you surely will die.
One day on a walk, the woman heard a voice,
That called her to make a consequential choice.
A serpent who questioned God's unchanging word
Caused the woman to doubt what she truly heard.
The serpent was crafty, deceiving, and sly,
He said to the woman, "you won't surely die!
Your eyes will be open, you really will see
The good from the evil. Like God, you'll be free!"
The woman picked some, and then she took a bite.
The man, who was there, didn't put up a fight.
He ate of it as well, the fruit that was banned,
Curious to see what they would understand.
The man and the woman both looked still the same,
But for the first time, their nakedness brought shame.
They sewed leaves together, and then ran and hid,
Not wanting God to know what it was they did.
But hiding from God is a terrible plan.
As soon as He found them, the blame game began.
"Adam! Where are you? What is this you have done?"
"The woman You gave me, yes, she is the one!
"She gave me the fruit and I ate it - I did.
We knew we were naked, and that's why we hid."
"Woman, what have you done? Please tell me, I pray!"
"The serpent deceived me. What more can I say?"
"Serpent! An enmity you will always feel.
Man will crush your head, though you will strike his heel.
Man, with great labor, bring food from the earth,
And woman, hard labor in your childbirth."
God took out of Eden the man and his bride
And made them new clothing from animal hide.
He blocked off the entrance with a flaming sword -
A constant reminder to obey the LORD.
What took God six days to make totally right
Was corrupted now by just one little bite.
Through the years, we see the effect of the choice
To follow our own paths and ignore God's voice.
God's plan is redemption. It's never quite done;
He's saving the world through the blood of His Son.
Through sin, we reap death and the curse, but, you see,
There is true freedom if the Son sets you free.
