You Do Great Work!
As I was going through the security line at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, my grandpa and I were given a special greeting and a handshake from a Transportation Security Administration (the other TSA) worker. He recognized the navy-blue uniforms we were wearing, and used the opportunity of us walking through the line to thank us for the good work we do. After clearing the security checkpoint, the good Major and I made our way to the food court in our terminal for a between-flights dinner. The server at the Uno Express gave us both a 15% discount. In the past, I have had people pay for my meal at a restaurant as their way of giving back. I am always grateful for these occurrences, but I never expect them.
When these things started happening, I wanted to turn them away. I don't do well with receiving compliments, probably because I don't think as highly of myself as some others seem to. However, when it comes to these gestures, I have learned to accept them when they come with open arms. So what is it that makes the difference?
I've realized that when people reach out in those ways, they aren't doing them for me specifically. I am blessed to be a representative of an international movement, recognized around the world for the love and care we show to all people. The handshakes, the "thank-yous," and other acts of kindness that are given at the sight of the uniform I wear come because of the great heritage that I represent when I wear it.
So here's to you, the officers, soldiers, employees, volunteers, and friends of The Salvation Army! Here's to the great 150 years of our history in the world, surrendering our hearts to God and reaching out our hands to the plight of mankind. Here's to the movement that, even in this present day and age, inspired people from across the city of London to take to Twitter, expressing their appreciation of seeing the worldwide Salvation Army represented in their town, noticing our politeness and our Christ-like attitudes during our sesquicentennial celebration. I am simply a face of the organization at large, and I am honored to be able to share the gratitude of the general population that has been expressed to me.
Thank you, Salvation Army! You are doing a great, God-honoring work. Let's keep it up and build on the rich heritage that we already have!
